This project has been recognized as Canada’s largest man-made coastal wetland and won the 2012 Hamilton-Halton Environmental Engineering Project of the Year Award as well as the Hamilton Public Works Project of the Year, Environment $10 to $50 million category. This high-profile project consisted of the transformation of a former industrial property into a large coastal wetland with an area of 11 hectares. Enhancement of the Windermere Basin involved changing flow patterns through dredging and dikes to prevent sediment build-up from Red Hill Creek, as well as capping contaminated sediments with clay. The resulting coastal wetland provides important breeding habitat for numerous fish and bird species.
